General Motors (GM) was founded in 1908 in the United States. In Japan, GM established General Motors Japan K.K. in 1927 and opened a factory for assembly in Osaka, Japan. GM Japan had sold as many as 150,000 units of vehicles until the company ceased operations in 1941, due to the World War II. After the World War II, GM established a Tokyo office in 1949 and changed its name to General Motors Japan Limited in 2011. The company currently handles two brands in Japan -- Cadillac and Chevrolet -- through a dealer network of 18 locations.
